Usurping Glory: Vampyres in England
By fact, one must be born into the power that they hold. This form of political hierarchy had remained in employ many years before the moment at which I decided to take pen to paper and record it as the statement above, and it is in employ at this very moment. I hold the opinion that this form of segregation of classes is, in all fairness, quite useless, and desire for it to be abolished. But this is not to be, as I am a solitary voice, and changing a hierarchy to a democracy is a task that must be performed by a mob in political frenzy, and finding one that could possibly further the cause would be very difficult, what with current ideals. Actually, many of my class choose to side with opposing beliefs, due to somewhat recent events that occurred a century ago. Perhaps more clarification is in order. In a revolt, much like the aforementioned political frenzy, the lower classes, along with some members of clergy, succeeded in their endeavors to eliminate the hierarchy and began a democracy of rudimentary proportions. This action, of course, brought on great changes. Pejoratively great.
Along with opening technology to the general public and offering education to any child born, the new 'President', as he liked to be known, seemingly inadvertently opened Pandora's Box. Certain members of the press retained the thought that it began with the revolution, but that was only first appearances, and upon further investigation, it would pan out to have been a genetic anomaly from living conditions of the serfs and common-folk, though this information
was covered up, and impoverished experts on the subject suddenly recanted all accounts and suddenly became no longer financially indebted. In any case, the true reasons for this unfortunate time could have been very, very dangerous if lent to a suspicious ear, so the silence regarding them was preserved for all concerned. This, of course, was a bad idea, growing exponentially worse with each questioning child that was hushed.
The living conditions of the serfs and common-folk, as I have mentioned above, were the causes of the initial changes themselves. Specifically, their diet being the most impacting factor, as their income ensured a poor one. Seeing as meat was readily available but cooking supplies and ingredients for food preservation were not, the common-folk turned to consuming their meat raw, resulting immediately in forms of poisoning, premature death, and malnutrition. Despite these obvious warnings that this continued behavior would result in catastrophe, they retained the consumption of uncooked pork and beef, feeding the blood to their children. It was only natural that those same children would eventually grow up to become sanguinarians, a living form of vampyre.
Some experts, shortly before their miraculous changes of both hearts and bank statements, brought up the valid point that some of the common-folk had, more than likely, acquired a gene for accelerated evolution, resulting in offspring that could survive without the average amount of food. Some believed that these new advancements resulted in a race that could survive on blood alone. This theory certainly accounted for the children's unusually enlarged canines, sallow complexion and strange affinity for darkness, but to prevent panic, no words were leaked to anyone. In any case, known or not, these vampyres were quickly dominating the serf population, and those who knew what was happening began to grossly
mistreat the new 'race'. Others, ignorant of any possible reasoning, joined in full force, not wanting their nescience to be revealed, setting off a massive anti-serf mentality among the upper classes. It was then that the revolution occurred, and the status quo began to deteriorate rapidly, beginning with the introduction of the 'President' himself.
It was no secret that those who became officials of high ranking were of the vampyric persuasion, or rather, no secret to those with the same mental prowess as my own, though this expulsion of truth was not so much one of trust from the leaders of the 'democracy', as it was general knowledge, gained from the vampyres' nuances and verbal diction by the quick-witted. In-jokes and unusual gestural code were among the most commonly used covert signals from vampyre to vampyre, broadcast on public television, and on the streets. Few knew exactly what the situation was, but many could tell that the state of affairs was never to be the same. Many were thrown into poverty, whether vampyre or human, although a single fact changed any sort of outcome that would have resulted from the same situation: This time, meat was no longer available. Because England's wealthiest were sanguinarians, they primarily purchased and hoarded meat, changing a communal life into a dog-eat-dog world. For the impoverished vampyres, this meant no ready source of sustenance. Still, no one was prepared for the rash of felonious acts that would follow.
Less than ten years after the revolution leaders had settled into their senatorial and judicial positions, unusual murders began to follow, centering around the serf and common-folk as victims. These homicides all had one common denomonator, that the victims were never vampyres. Each man or woman, (for never a child was counted among the dead) was human, left pale and gaunt in their beds, eyes glassed with pupils of sienna, staring at the ceiling, petrified
through either rigor mortis or fear. Immediately it was pegged as the work of the sanguinarians, but this was quickly smothered by the ugly truth that, no matter what, there was no one to turn to, as all law enforcement and higher powers consisted of vampyres, all of whom shared a single forgotten mentality: survival. Surely they would not condemn their brethren simply because they were forced to kill for food. This mentality in mind, a group of humans initialized a secret underground faction which would ensure the quick extermination of the 'vampyric menace'. These humans, armed with whatever equipment that the ancient texts they consulted recommended for destroying the sanguinarians, began to slaughter the 'menaces' one by one, until they were convinced that they were saved. The truth, however, shall be saved for another time.
